Description

What Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg is and what it is used for

Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg is an antibiotic that contains the active substance linezolid and is effective against bacterial infectious diseases with certain germs. Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg may only be used if prescribed by a doctor to treat severe, hospital-acquired pneumonia and complicated skin infections and soft tissue infections when other antibiotics are ineffective against these germs.

Prescriptened by your doctor.

What precautions should be taken?

This medicine has been prescribed for you by your doctor to treat your current illness.

The antibiotic in Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg is not effective against all microorganisms that cause infectious diseases. The use of an incorrectly chosen or incorrectly dosed antibiotic can cause complications. Therefore, never use it on your own to treat other diseases or other people.

When not to take Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg?

If you have a known or suspected hypersensitivity (allergy) to any of the ingredients of Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg.

When is caution needed when taking Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg?

Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg can interact with numerous medicines, e.g. antidepressants, certain heart and asthma medicines, certain medicines for colds or coughs (e.g. with the active ingredients pseudoephedrine, phenylpropanolamine), appetite suppressants, medicines containing rifampicin, certain migraine medicines (so-called triptans), Painkillers (e.g. with the active ingredients pethidine, tramadol, buprenorphine), anxiolytic drugs with the active ingredient buspirone, adrenaline, noradrenaline and dopamine-containing drugs and anti-Parkinson drugs with the active ingredient selegiline. This can result in a life-threatening situation known as serotonin syndrome (severe changes in brain, muscle and digestive tract function due to high levels of serotonin in the body; see «What side effects can Linezolid Sandoz have?»). Therefore, inform your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines that you are taking.

If you are taking a contraceptive ("the pill"), be aware that its effectiveness may be reduced during antibiotic therapy. Your doctor or pharmacist can therefore recommend further contraceptive measures.

Serious skin reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and toxic epidermal necrolysis have been reported with the use of Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg. These are often preceded by fever and/or flu-like symptoms.

Discontinue Linezolid Sandoz immediately at the first signs of inflammatory skin changes and allergic reactions (e.g. reddening of the skin, skin rash with blistering, swelling of the face, skin or mucous membranes, asthma, shortness of breath, circulatory problems) and inform your doctor immediately.

If diarrhea occurs during or after treatment with Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg, especially if it is severe, prolonged and/or bloody, this may indicate an infection with the pathogen Clostridium difficile. If you suspect such a complication, you must stop treatment with Linezolid Sandoz immediately and contact your doctor for advice. If you have diarrhea, you should not take any medication that slows down intestinal peristalsis (intestinal movements).

Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg may be incompatible with certain food components. Therefore, avoid consuming too much mature cheese, yeast extracts, soy products (e.g. soy sauce) or alcoholic beverages. If you have a pounding headache after eating, tell your doctor or pharmacist.

If you suffer from uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood pressure crises as a result of a tumor (such as pheochromocytoma or carcinoid), an overactive thyroid gland, certain mental illnesses (such as depression, bipolar psychosis or confusion), you should only take Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg if possible for precise observation and control of blood pressure.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you suffer from epilepsy or if you have had epileptic fits in the past. Please also inform these people if your kidney or liver function is severely restricted.

Also tell your doctor or pharmacist if you feel sick/unwell accompanied by muscle weakness, seizures, headaches or confusion. These may be signs of hyponatraemia (low levels of sodium in the blood) which may be associated with taking Linezolid Sandoz.

This medicine can impair the ability to react, the ability to drive and the ability to use tools or machines (see «What side effects can Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg have?»).

sodium

This medicinal product contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) per film-coated tablet, ie essentially 'sodium-free'.

Caution is advised when driving or operating machines, especially at the beginning of treatment and during longer treatment (visual disturbances).

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are on

  • suffering from other diseases
  • have allergies or
  • are taking other medicines (including those you bought yourself!).

Can Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg be taken when pregnant or breastfeeding?

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding, Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg may only be taken with the doctor's or pharmacist's express permission.

How do you use Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg?

The doctor determines the dosage and duration of treatment based on the severity of the disease.

In general, the following dosing guidelines apply:

adult

600 mg twice daily.

Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg film-coated tablets can be taken before, during or after a meal.

Patients on dialysis should take Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg after dialysis.

Once antibiotic therapy has started, it should be continued for as long as prescribed by the doctor. The symptoms of the disease often disappear before the infection has completely healed. Insufficient duration of use or stopping treatment too early can result in the disease flaring up again.

If you accidentally swallow too much Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg film-coated tablets, report this to the doctor or pharmacist immediately.

If you miss a dose, resume therapy as normal as soon as you realize it.

In no case do not double the dose.

In general, therapy with Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg lasts 10-14 days but can last up to a maximum of 28 days.

Children and young people under the age of 18

There is limited data on efficacy and safety in children and adolescents (under 18 years of age). Therefore, until further data are available, the use of Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg in this age group is not recommended.

Do not change the prescribed dosage or duration of therapy on your own. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

What are the possible side effects of Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg?

The following side effects may occur when taking or using Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg:

Common (affects 1 to 10 users in 100)

The most common symptoms are diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, cramps, flatulence and headaches, as well as changes in taste (metallic taste), high blood sugar levels (hyperglycaemia, and fungal infections and changes in liver values.

If you have severe, persistent diarrhea with abdominal cramps and fever, stop taking Linezolid Sandoz and contact your doctor immediately. If diarrhea occurs, you must not take any medicines that inhibit intestinal peristalsis (bowel movement).

Uncommon (affects 1 to 10 users in 1000)

In addition, the following side effects occasionally occur: chills, fever, dizziness, blurred vision, tiredness, insomnia, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), dry mouth, increased thirst, gastrointestinal problems, abdominal pain, constipation, inflammation of the mouth, swollen or discolored tongue, inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis, marked by: sudden, severe pain in the upper abdomen, nausea and vomiting), increased urine production, tingling, numbness, changed blood pressure, skin reactions (redness, itching), increased sweating, vaginal inflammation.

Rare (affects 1 to 10 users in 10,000)

Seizures (convulsions) have been reported rarely after taking Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg, especially in predisposed people (see also the note under “When should you take Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg with caution?”).

Blood count changes such as a lack of red or white blood cells or blood platelets can occur during treatment with Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg. Symptoms of such changes in the blood count can be a drop in performance, tiredness, fever, chills, small bruises, mucous membrane bleeding and impaired wound healing.

Taking Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg can cause inflammation of the blood vessels in the skin (hypersensitivity vasculitis) with resulting rash and tissue damage. Discontinue Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg immediately if you experience any inflammatory skin changes and contact your doctor immediately.

Very rare (affects less than 1 in 10,000 people)

Sensory disturbances and/or visual disturbances such as blurred or blurred vision, changes in color vision, blind spots (so-called peripheral and/or optic neuropathies) have been observed very rarely. If you notice such visual disturbances, please contact your doctor immediately.

Superficial tooth discolouration has also been observed very rarely after the use of Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg. In cases where the outcome was known, the discolouration could be (manually) removed with dental hygiene measures.

Serious skin and hypersensitivity reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis) have also been reported. Discontinue Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg at the first sign of an allergic reaction (e.g. reddening of the skin, skin rash with blistering, swelling of the face, skin or mucous membranes, asthma, shortness of breath, circulatory problems) and contact your doctor immediately.

Isolated cases (frequency not known)

Cases of so-called lactic acidosis have been observed after taking Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg; in the case of very strong and recurring nausea and vomiting, the doctor treating you must also be informed immediately.

The active substance in Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg can weakly inhibit certain endogenous substances (the so-called monoamine oxidases, MAO). As a result of interactions with other medicines or food components (see the note under "When should you be careful when taking Linezolid Sandoz 600 mg?"), there have been isolated cases of undesirable drug effects that can be attributed to this property. Signs of such an interaction may include anxiety, tremors, cramps, flushing, headaches, tachycardia, shortness of breath and high blood pressure.

If you get one or more of the following symptoms, contact your doctor or hospital straight away:

  • nausea and vomiting,
  • involuntary muscle contractions,
  • restlessness

  • Sleepiness,
  • impaired consciousness,
  • involuntary and rapid eye movements,
  • tachycardia,
  • coordination disorders,
  • psychoses with visual hallucinations and hyperexcitability,
